Foundations of working with children, HIV Testing, Disclosure and Adherence

HIV testing of children has traditionally been an adult-focused event between the caregiver and the healthcare worker, with the child as an uninformed spectator who becomes afraid and confused.

For children to experience this process, calmly and without fear, they need to be included and should receive information about their health that is age-appropriate and child-friendly.

This is a course that equips healthcare workers with skills and knowledge to confidently provide holistic services when working with children in HIV testing, disclosure and adherence.

Available in English and Portuguese

MODULES INCLUDED IN THE COURSE:

Foundations of working with children

Healthcare workers express fear and apprehension when asked to counsel children. They feel intimidated, not knowing how to relate to the child. This component of the training builds confidence and skills to work with, engage and counsel children in their own language. Through play therapy methods such as drawing, storytelling and role-playing techniques, participants will learn how to make children feel safe and comfortable whilst dealing with sensitive issues.

*This module is offered as a stand-alone courses

Holistic model for Disclosure

The biggest barrier for children living with HIV going undiagnosed is fear around disclosure. Caregivers and healthcare workers have limited knowledge and skills to know how to address the issue of disclosure with children and adolescents.

The holistic model for Disclosure equips healthcare workers with confidence, skills, knowledge and a framework to support caregivers through the barriers, and journey to disclosure in an age-appropriate, child-focused method.

*This module is offered as a stand-alone course

HIV Pre and Post Test counselling

This module is designed to address the barriers service providers have to provide child-friendly HIV testing services, through the introduction of KidzAlive job aids and how to practically apply these resources in the pre- and post test counselling process with children and their caregivers, as well as understanding the law and its relation to HIV testing and children.

Adherence

HIV-infected children and their caregivers need practical guidance on how to best manage their illness.

KidzAdherence equips healthcare workers to answer these questions using play and a story-based curriculum that covers general HIV education, wellness, nutrition, quality living strategies and treatment adherence. The intervention can be conducted with groups or as a one-on-one session. Through knowledge and skills acquired during this module, healthcare workers will be able to deliver structured KidzAdherence services to support positive clinical outcomes.

  • Educate children and their caregivers during the pre- and post-testing process
