KidzAlive Mobilised Project
Traditionally, children living with HIV have only been able to access KidzAlive via in-person interaction at public health clinics and community-based organisations, but through the use of technology, this much needed resource is now becoming easily available and these innovations are supporting these children through their journey so that they will not merely survive but will also be empowered to thrive.
Since 2017, the KidzAlive Mobilised project has been innovating and developing child-centred HIV digital interventions with close collaboration, guidance and generous investment by Qualcomm Wireless Reach. KidzAlive, which has historically only been accessible through in-person interaction at public health clinics and community-based organisations, is now becoming easily available because technology has given Zoë-Life the ability to expand its reach in real-time to children living with HIV; support their primary caregivers with latest information to enhance psychosocial support at home; and increase healthcare worker capacity and confidence to provide child-friendly, age-appropriate HIV care.
This project is currently being implemented in KwaZulu-Natal (eThekwini, Zululand), Mpumalanga (Nkangala, Gert Sibande, Ehlanzeni), Gauteng (Ekurhuleni) and in Nigeria.

Digital Job-Aid
The KidzAlive Talk Tool App is a versatile digital job-aid that can be used to fill the gap to enhance HIV prevention, care and treatment for children and adolescents in both one-on-one counselling and in a KidzAdherence Support Group.
Empowering healthcare workers
Adapted from the paper-based job aid, the KidzAlive Talk Tool App places children at the centre of the clinic appointment and empowers healthcare workers to confidently provide accurate child-friendly and age-appropriate information to a child and their caregiver, during a session.
Built-in data collection
The KidzAlive Talk Tool App also collects service level data, which is accessed through the App Management Portal and Data Dashboard and is perfect for the on-the-go healthcare worker in a clinical and community setting.
KidzAlive Caregiver Connect
Supporting caregivers at home
With the challenge of Covid-19, Zoë-Life identified an opportunity to assist primary caregivers having limited access to support at their public health facilities, as well as not automatically having the skills and language on how to inclusively support their children living with HIV at home.
24/7 access to up-to-date info on WhatsApp
Developed on the Turn.io platform, KidzAlive Caregiver Connect is a communications intervention specifically aimed at primary caregivers. Through the use of WhatsApp on primary caregivers’ mobile devices, they have 24/7 access to KidzAlive designed messaging with up-to-date information, links to other best practices around HIV management at the household level, and practical tips through text, video, and infographics. The goal is to equip primary caregivers to support their children and adolescents at home with HIV education, treatment, prevention, adherence, disclosure
Innovation in progress
KidzAlive@Home App
Currently in development, the KidzAlive@Home App is a continuum of care solution to strengthen treatment adherence at the household level, by transforming children and adolescents, from being bystanders to active players in the management of their health, through the use of innovative adherence tools to engage, educate and reinforce positive adherence and wellness behaviours in their daily living.
Strengthening treatment adherence at home
This app is for children and adolescents who are newly diagnosed with HIV and initiated on treatment, or already on treatment and adherent, or who are non-adherent. The app features include: daily scheduled reminders to take their ARVs, notifications for clinic appointments, daily mood and health tracker.
