Family Support Intervention

Case-finding is a strategy for identifying children who are undiagnosed with HIV. It is intentional ‘looking and screening’ for children at all entry points of care.

If we want children to thrive, we need to start having conversations with caregivers by finding out what their fears and barriers are to having their children tested, and through the KidzAlive Family Support Intervention course, healthcare workers learn how to provide the support and guidance needed to caregivers so that undiagnosed children can be found.

THIS COURSE TEACHES HEALTHCARE WORKERS
TO SPEAK TO CAREGIVERS ABOUT:

  • HIV Basics

  • Barriers to getting their children tested

  • The advantages of getting their children tested

  • Denial and stigma

  • Fear of disclosure

  • Identifying circles of support should their children test positive

  • Disclosure safety

THROUGH SKILLS ACQUIRED IN THE COURSE, HEALTHCARE WORKERS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Provide caregivers with the necessary HIV knowledge to ensure they are able to make well-informed decisions around their child’s health

  • Build a supportive network amongst caregivers who are infected, or affected by HIV

  • Assist caregivers to deal with the social, cultural and emotional obstacles that may prevent them from testing their children for HIV, and disclosing their status to them

  • Assist caregivers to express how they feel about their own and their children’s status

  • Introduce caregivers to the disclosure process

Course can be done in-person for 3 days or via online learning.

At an additional cost, we can provide post-training support and mentorship.
